## Under Center at Michigan: A QB Race Heats Up

The battle for Michigan’s starting quarterback position might be the most closely watched competition in Ann Arbor this fall, but Coach Sherrone Moore isn't giving anything away. With the Wolverines nearing the halfway point of fall camp, Moore remained tight-lipped about who will lead the offense against New Mexico, revealing only that the decision will be made public on Monday of game week, with the team knowing beforehand.

While the media waits for official word, sources close to the program tell a different story. Multiple individuals have indicated that Bryce Underwood is trending towards securing the starting role. This wouldn't come as a surprise to many, considering his relentless work ethic, which consistently impresses Moore.  

"He’s a quiet kid by nature, but when he knows you, he’ll talk,” Moore said of Underwood. “He’s got an affectionate personality, great young man, obviously well documented with family. Jay and Beverly have done a great job raising him. Just comes to work every day, lunch pail, ready to go. Does everything the right way and attacks the right way. A pleasure to be around."

Moore emphasized that regardless of who takes the field on opening night, the expectations remain the same: “Expectations—for whoever the starting quarterback is, it’s to raise the level of the team. Be leaders of the offense. The quarterback has to be the captain of that room and that offense. Whoever that is, that’s what I want him to be.”

Looking beyond Underwood, Moore provided insights into each quarterback vying for playing time: 

* **Mikey Keene:** "Obviously, the experience. He’s had over 2,300 snaps of college football. He’s been through every situation, done it all, seen it all."
* **Jake Garcia:** “Same thing (as Keene). He’s seen it, done it, great arm talent, great ability. He’s been really good for us and for the room.”
* **Jadyn Davis:** “His command, his knowledge of the offense, how he does it. A football junkie, a guy that loves the game.” 

Moore made it clear that consistency will be paramount in determining the starter. "Just consistently do it," Moore said. "Whoever that person is, continue to grab the team and consistently do it throughout these times because this is where camp really gets hard. You’re in practice 12–15. Are you going to keep the level of play? Just want to see that level of consistency."

## Michigan Defensive Line Coach Lou Esposito Speaks Out

Michigan football's defensive line coach, Lou Esposito, recently met with reporters to discuss the team's progress and provide insights into his players. 

**Building Chemistry and Competition Up Front**

Esposito highlighted the positive atmosphere within the defensive line room, emphasizing the competitive spirit driving their development. He praised the bond between veterans Derrick Moore and TJ Guy, acknowledging the influence of experienced mentors like Pernell McPhee and Ty Martindale.  

“It’s been really good,” Esposito said. “They've had a good camp so far. So we're excited about them. A lot of good, a lot of good guys in that room. And I think competition breeds success. Iron sharpens iron."

**Finding Talent in the Transfer Portal**

Tre Williams, a transfer from the portal, has quickly become a valuable asset to the Wolverines. Esposito detailed the process behind recruiting Williams, emphasizing his physical presence and personality.  

"He was extremely stout and explosive," Esposito explained. "Those are the guys that we want... He fit what we wanted on the field. And then obviously you have to sit down with him and meet him. His personality is electric."

**Developing Untapped Potential**

Nate Marshall, a recent arrival who played basketball before switching to football, has impressed Esposito with his athleticism and eagerness to learn. 

"He’s an unbelievable athlete,” Esposito said. "He could just line the ball up right now and say go pass rush, go win, and he could do that."

**Preparing for Road Games in a New Era of College Football**

Esposito acknowledged the unique challenges posed by road games in today's college football landscape. He highlighted the importance of focusing on internal factors and maintaining cohesion amidst unfamiliar environments. 

"It’s going to be different," Esposito said. "The way we’re going to have to win on the road in different venues, different circumstances, different times. So we’re going to have to prepare in a way where we bring our own juice and bring our own focus.”

**Building Depth at Defensive Tackle**


Esposito addressed the competition for playing time amongst his defensive tackles, emphasizing the constant need to improve and adapt. He stressed the importance of physicality, knockback, and relentless effort from all players vying for a starting role.  

"The biggest thing with those guys is they all have to be physical," Esposito said. "They all have to play with knockback, and they all have to play with great effort."


**A Powerful Brand and Recruiting Edge**

When asked about the appeal of Michigan football to recruits, Esposito emphasized the unique combination of tradition, academic excellence, and on-field success that sets the program apart. He described a culture where players are nurtured both as athletes and individuals, preparing them for life beyond the gridiron.  


“There’s a tradition of successful people that play that position here because it’s hard," Esposito said. "It’s not natural."

 **Facing a Tough Test: Haynes and Marshall**

Esposito acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by opposing running backs Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall. He praised their explosiveness, power, and ability to make defenders miss in space. 
  
"They get in the open field—they’re fast, they’re powerful, they’re strong,” Esposito said.
